Exposing 2007

January 1st, 2008 : Nik Rowell

The last twelve months; particularly the last six, have seen big steps in my photographic vision. I’ve taken a camera where I haven’t done so before, looked at things from new perspectives and improved my processing skills. I’ve selected 10 of my favorite photos from 2007 to share with you. Some of them I’ve selected for technical qualities as a “good photo”, others simply for the personal experience that surrounds it. I hope you enjoy what you see.

(in approximate order of date created - earliest first… with the exception of the last photo)

Bare Birch
Taken July-ish, South of Outing, MN, while exploring a new lake to fish with my Dad (in the middle of deer tick heaven).

Sandbay Rocks
BWCA September, 2007 - After a day of canoeing through high winds, 40 degree temperatures and some rain, the evening calmed enough for some nice shots. A rainbow formed shortly after this… but I chose to soak up the experience through my own eyes, not the viewfinder.

Unidentified Plant
Taken in the BWCA, prior to our big sunset session (Classic BWCA, BWCA Moonrise). I selected this one primarily for it’s technical qualities - I think the saturation and sharpness are quite nice and the depth of field perfect. Composition could be improved upon slightly.

Classic BWCA
You just can’t go to the Boundary Waters without taking one of these classic BWCA shots. Took a good 15 minutes to position the canoe just right.

Shooting Jon Shooting
Sometimes, it seems like sunset shots are a dime a dozen, but turn around or take a few steps back, and things can change significantly. I like this shot. I think it’s a good representation of Jon Stenseth’s patience and dedication to nature photography.

BWCA Moonrise
I like the simplicity of this photo. Taken on the last night of my trip to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in September, minutes after our big sunset session.

Self Service
I’d driven by this old abandoned gas stations many, many times and never decided to stop. For those familiar with the area, this is the gas station about 1 mile north of Grand Casino Mile Lacs on Hwy 169.

Bluefin Pier
I spent the first weekend of December at Bluefin Bay Resort - and attended a photography workshop they were hosting. Unfortunately, much of the weekend was snowy, cold and extremely windy… so my intentions of shooting were replaced with cooking, watching movies, and jumping between the hot tub and a large snow drift. This photo makes an appearance in my post on Adobe AIR

Roosevelt Christmas
This photo was used in my ‘Virtual Postcard‘ flash experiment. I went for a solo walk along the lake on Christmas eve. Just me, my camera and a Tiesto podcast.

If you made it this far, Thank you! It means a lot to me :)

NOTE: January 3, 2008: I came across this one that I thought was worthy of the “Top 11 of 2007″ list…

Late Show
Lake Harriet Bandstand, taken mid June at about 2:30 am. This was one of several long exposure experiments.

They’ll all great but I love the serenity of Roosevelt Christmas. I can almost hear the snow crunch under my boots.
