Make iTunes Do What You Really Want - By (scripting) Force

April 18th, 2007 : Nicholas Longtin

Do you have a Mac? Do you use iTunes? Does it frustrate you that Apple has chosen to make it a dumbed down music manager that lacks some truly useful features? Me too!

Check out Doug’s AppleScripts for iTunes. Doug has collected a truly great collection of script that are free to download, easy to install, and add new features to iTunes. More iTunes tips after the jump.

By default iTunes doesn’t have the AppleScript menu in the interface. To add it open the folder /Library/iTunes in your home directory, and add a folder called “Scripts”.

iTunes Scripts Folder

This folder is where iTunes AppleScripts you download (or write) will go. Once there are scripts in this folder you will see the scripts menu when iTunes is open.

iTunes AppleScript Menu

I downloaded a script from Doug’s site that takes the files in a play list of your choice and copies them to a folder. This is a great way to put files on an external hard drive, smart phone, or other device.

This script worked; however, it was a bit cumbersome. You have to edit it each time you want to copy from a different play list, and the destination folder is also hard coded.

I used the editor that comes with OS X (/Applications/AppleScript/Script Editor) to make some quick changes, and the resulting script is easier to use.

Enter Play List Name

I now just enter the name of my play list, then browse to a folder where I want the files copied to. You can download my script here and try it out for yourself.

Check out Doug’s site for more scripts. Happy listening!
